This week is dedicated to the colour blue. The colour of the sky and the colour of the sea. Is it the sky that makes the sea blue or the sea that makes the sky blue?
Blue is really a new colour in history, it was never described in Greek literature or used in the paintings in caves. Blue colorants started to be developed 6 000 years ago, after the discovery of lapis lazuli, a precious stone mined in Afghanistan.
The most representative “blues” along the history of art are “Egyptian blue”, “Ultramarine”, Indigo” “Prusian Blue” and “Klein Blue”.
Blue can be associated with the feeling of sadness with the expression of “to feel blue”, but it doesn’t have the same meaning in all cultures. For example, in German “blau sein” (literally: to be blue) means to be drunk” or in Russian “голубой” (literally: light blue) means to be homosexual.
“Prince Charming” is called “The Blue Prince” in Italian and Spanish.
Blue is described as a favorite colour by many people and is the color most preferred by men. Blue calls to mind feelings of calmness or serenity. It is often described as peaceful, tranquil, secure, and orderly. However, blue can also create feelings of sadness or aloofness.
Many songs related to blue have been written such as The Blue Danube of Johann Strauss, Blue of Eiffel 65 and Blue Monday of New Order.
Do you like blue? We bet it is your favourite colour!
